I love donuts. When we were in Mobile, the Krispy Kreme outlet is just a few blocks away from where we stayed. Gosh, I can feel my mouth watering every time we pass the store. So finally, we bought half a dozen of freshly bake, fresh from the oven and still hot donuts…. Believe me… I ate and ate and enjoyed it a lot! Yummyyy!

Today Post::Broiled Flounder
I never had flounder so Dave insisted that I should buy it. From the looks of it (and the price), I will not buy it. Flounder is a bit pricey but Dave insisted that I should try so we bought 1 Flounder fish.
Dave told me that he used to eat flounder and it is really good. He couldn’t wait for me to try it. I wanted to grill it but since I have lazy bones in me (lol), I don’t want to do the charcoal grilling for one piece of fish. I then decided to just broil it in the oven.
Ingredients:
1 Flounder
powdered garlic
garlic salt
pepper
Directions:
- Preheat oven to broil
- Put two slits on the body of the fish on both sides. Season the whole fish with garlic salt, garlic powder and pepper. Place in a cookie sheet.
- Broil for 10 minutes. Turn over and broil some more.
- Serve with dip ( a mixture of soysauce, vinegar, tomato, onion, pepper)
Note: Time of broiling varies so just keep on checking your oven.
Today Post::Clams Soup
I was able to buy live clams at The Whole Foods Market. This place sells fresh fish and seafood. Dave likes clam soup so I was excited to make it for him.
Ingredients:
12 Clams
ginger
onion
tomato
spring onions
pepper
water
salt (to taste)
Directions:
- Combine ginger, onion, tomato and the white part of spring onions.
- Add 4 cups of water. Bring to boil
- Add clams and the green part of the spring onion.
- Cook until clams open its shell.
- Serve

One of the most common problems when storing your favorite food at your work’s refrigerator is you can’t control if somebody will get your food. Of course, you can’t just stay inside the pantry and guard your food. There is a risk that your food will be consumed by your officemate without your knowledge. If you are experiencing this annoying problem, you need to check out www.FridgeLocker.com. This is your solution to keep your food safe from “Fridge-A-Raiders”. Today Post::Food Trip Friday # 18

I went to the nearest Filipino store and I found this ripe mango. This is actually a product of Mexico but this is the closest I can get that taste like our mango in the Philippines. The Philippine mango taste better but this is also good. It is sweet and it has the smell of a ripe mango.

Today Post::Fish... and More Fish!
Before we went home from our Mobile trip, we loaded up with a lot of fish and shrimp. It is cheaper in Mobile and there are a lot of choices. We are fortunate to find a seafood place that sells everything that I want… so take a look at what I bought…
Did you know that eating fish is good for your health? It is recommended to eat fish so that your body can get fish oils, which are essential for heart, brain, joint and digestive health.
Today Post::Crustless Leek Tart, Greek style
You come home on a Saturday that has been fraught with activity after a full week, and the onset of colder weather makes you crave hearty food. But you don’t want to slave away. The crustless leek tart Greek style by an acquaintance of mine was just something that filled the ticket. The irony is that I had bought a ready-made crust for another tart, and my tired brain had absentmindedly unpacked the crust already. So I baked a pleonastic tart: a filling that is almost like a crust + new crust. But it’s all about what’s inside this baked goody.
Crustless Leek Tart, Greek style
6 big leeks, also the green parts
pepper and salt
2 bay leaves
50 g semolina flour
3 eggs
100 g grated gruyère or other cheese (I used parmezan)
2-3 tablespoons breadcrumbs
180 g feta
Preheat the oven at 180 °C.
Clean the leeks, cut them in rings. Add the bay leaves, and either steam or stirfry the leek until they are done. Remove the bay leaves, season with salt and pepper (no salt necessary on account of the feta). Add the semolina, and mix well.
Beat the eggs, and add them to the leek-semolina, mix again. Add the grated cheese, mix.
Coat a cake tin with butter, and sprinkle it with the breadcrumbs. Add the leek mix to the tin. Cut the feta in pieces, and divide over the tart.
Bake for 30 minutes. Serve warm.
The kind of comfort food that makes you feel grateful that you still lifted a finger to make it. Never mind the crust this time.

Mischa had knee surgery yesterday so we are staying with her to help her out.
Today, she received a fruit basket from her work. This is the first time that I see real fruit basket and it is really cool. Of course, we had fun eating them…
The fruits in the basket are: cantaloupe, honey dew, pineapple, grapes and strawberry. Isn’t it pretty? The flower which is made of pineapple and cantaloupe is really cool….
Today Post::House Extention and Renovation
Our house extension and renovation in the Philippines is almost done. Actually, this is my sister’s big project of the year. She wanted another 2 bedroom extension on our existing house and renovate the kitchen. They plan on going home next year so they want a room for themselves with shower and bath.
She already told
the contractor that she wants a big space for the shower and bath on both rooms. She wanted to have a separate bath tub and Shower Enclosures. She got an idea about shower enclosures when she visited Custom Glass Shower Enclosures’ website. My sister was really excited when she found out that the contractor knows how to install shower enclosures as he has done it before.
Few more final installation on some things and our house extension and renovation will be done. We expect to have two wonderful and spacious guest rooms and a bigger kitchen. I can’t wait to come home and see it for myself. Of course, I will be staying in one of the newly constructed guest rooms.
Today Post::Calendars
Calendars are one of the most common give-aways during the holiday season. In the Philippines, calendars are hang everywhere. Calendars varies in sizes and designs. Some calendars are custom made per family as a way of Christmas greetings.
When you visit houses in the Philippines, I am sure you will never miss seeing a calendar in the wall because for us calendars are very useful. We always like the calendars with high tide and low tide notations on it. We also like the one that shows the monthly moon cycle. Most people also owns pocket calendars because it is the easiest way to keep track of dates and appointments.
Today Post::Dining @ Mom's (last Saturday)
Mom invited us to have dinner with them last Saturday. We had a lot to eat for sure. Look at what we had…
Dan made his very famous smoked ribs which Andrea love so much. Even when Andrea was younger, she will love to munch this ribs. Dan’s ribs is the best … even better than any restaurants we have been to.
Today Post::Free Home Insulation
Homes need to be properly insulated so that there will be less electricity bill. How I wish there is a program like the one that is offered by The Australian economic stimulus package. The Australian Federal Government is providing $1600 to every home owner to insulate their home. Now isn’t that nice? An estimated 440,000 homes in Australia will receive this grant so that they can buy insulation materials for their homes.
Installing Insulation Batts will help households reduce their energy use, cut their power bills by around $200 a year, and increase the comfort and value of their homes. The insulation rebate from government will surely help shoulder the cost when a householder decides to install insulation batts.
A householder can chose to install a Thermal and Acoustic batts for their home because these type of insulation batt is very easy to install. Daniel Yliche of Insulation Batts Australia sells insulation at building standards that exceed the Australian Standards Code. Check their website today and take advantage of the free insulation grant provided by the Australian government.
Today Post::Enamor them with lunch
Preparing copious lunch salads is always a treat, and double portions come in handy when visitors surprize you unannounced. Although this Bean Salad from my favorite book Super Salads (Dutch ISBN 90-5920 164 7) by Michael van Straten can also serve as a small appetizer before a meal, as main dish it managed to captivate my guest on a sunny high noon in October and set his blood pumping.
Bean Salad with Eggs and Curry
4 hard boiled eggs
1 can (300 g) of green flageolet beans
1 can (300g) of white beans
2 tablespoons curry powder
6 tablespoons of mayonaise
1 red onion
2 tablespoons of chopped cilantro
Prepare and combine all ingredients.
Note: I used parsley instead of cilantro, and only white beans. Generous amounts of curry powder give this dish pizzazz. The salad is said to stimulate blood circulation.
